This is how I'm declaring the mouse events in the highcharts options :

   plotOptions:{
        column:{
            point: {
              events:  {
                mouseOut: onItemMouseOut,
                mouseOver: onItemMouseOver
                },
            },
            states:{hover:{enabled:false}},
        },
    },
