I need to enable an audio track on a video that does not already have on.  I need to do this because the Silverlight MediaElement control has some bugs when it plays video without an audio track.  So, I add an audio profile and mute the track on the Silverlight side.

Because of this, I want the audio track to impact the final size of the video as little as possible.  Simply adding the audio track bloats my file by 13%.  So far, the best I can do is set the Audio Profile to "WMA Low Quality Audio".  This only bloats the file by 6.3%.

I want to do better than that.  Unfortunately, it seems that any custom profile that I set does not change the output.  For instance, If I change the bitrate from 64 kbps to 5 kbps, Expression Encoder hapilly changes other settings... the sample rate goes to 8 kHz and it goes to mono output.

Unfortunately, the output file size barely changes by doing this.  Any idea why?

As a side note, I tried changing the Mode from CBR to VBR, which brings me down to a 1.1% bloat, but the time it takes to encode goes up by 3x!!!!  This is also not acceptable.

Can anyone give me some tips for decreasing the quality of the audio track to minimize file size?

The CBR 5kbs is about the smallest you can do.  Just turning on the audio stream adds a certian amount of overhead that can't be removed.
