I have a Sharepoint 2013 server installed on one Windows 2012 server. Recently the site became corrupt and we had to restore from a backup. After the reboot, everything appeared to be there. However, the primary page which is the enterprise search page failed to return any results. Essentially the error said Sharepoint failed to respond with a correlation ID. I checked and found the Search Service application had stopped with errors. I was unable to restart or repair the service. I ended up deleting the Search service and created a new one called Search Service 1. I reset the index and started a complete Full crawl. I had no errors and 10,000+ successes. I looked under the Search Administration page and saw there were 6000+ items under searchable content. I am unable to get any content to return. I went so far as to create a new test subsite and still no results. I have Sharepoint data and Fileshare data that successfully get crawled. Whether I look for sharepoint documents or file share documents that I have verified that have crawled. Zero results, I have had issues where the built-in everyone, people, videos, etc filters needed to be removed for results to return. That is not the case this time.

Please make sure the Search service is started in CA->Manage service on Server.
