I have a SharePoint app that contains data about projects going on in many companies. We intend to create a search page where a user can enter a string and receive results. Once on the results page I'd like to have the left hand nav pane be divided in sections. The built-in ones are fine, result type, author, date modified, but I'd like to add Company and Category, both of which are site columns. The idea would be that, once on the results page, a user could click on a company name or category and "drill down" into the results to find projects by company or category. I've looked at refiners and managed properties, but I'm having trouble putting it all together.....

You have to create a Managed Property for the Search query to work. If you created a Site Column SharePoint Search will create a Managed Property for you based on the Site Column name. Go through below blog it might help you
