As explained in the title, I'd like to lock items when a workflow is running on them.  Currently anyone with permissions, can edit an item, even when a workflow is currently running.  I've seen the workaround where you use a 2010 workflow to change the permissions within the workflow, but I'd rather stick with my already complex 2013 workflow.  Any ideas?

Use custom workflow activities tools from old Codeplex or Github. That should give you an option to lock your files for editing.
