I am at my wits end with my acer aspire 1700.

The cd/dvd drive failed a few weeks ago [motor]. I bought a new one [in fact two turned up [Quanta SBW-242].

I have installed one and the laptop finds new hardware but has no idea what it is. A ? mark appears followed by 12 square boxes as a description. I have disabled it and tried again and I get the same results with the other new unit I have.

Has anyone any ideas?

Manually install the driver. You can usually download it from the manufacturer''s website, or if you got a disk with it...

Are you logged on as an Administrator account when you fire it up? Perhaps you don''t have the authority to set up the driver.
