My current provider is limited to NET 3.5 - I need at least .NET 4.0. My initial research suggests I should avoid sites such as HostGator, HostMonster, Host4ASP and Arvixe. Such sites have more than a few bad reviews from users who have tried them.

I would like to hear from those who have been with their windows hosting provider for a few years and have had, for the most part, good experiences with the provider. And of course, please let me know the name of your provider.

My requirements are very simple - ftp, email, a single/simple web site, no e-commerce.

I haven't had any issues with HostGator...they've been a fine host.

However, if you want full control over what you are deploying/need hosting. I suggest you take a look at azure or AWS. In the example of AWS (it is what i am familiar with) you launch a virtual machine on EC2 for your windows server. You can start out on the micro tier which is free for the first year (i believe) and then move on to other servers which are 30-60/month...in the realm of hosting it is pricy compared to 10/month but you have full control over the server and don't have to rely on the willingness of a hosting provider to install items you need for you.

And also, you won't be limited by your hosting providers available resources. If you need more ram you can take an image of your current server, deploy that image and up the resources and turn off the old server.

Moving onward from Solution 1, I have had been working with a few clients who were ASP.NET based. I had worked with many online hosting providers, the most being ServerSea (which provides Linux solutions at most). The problem was same, the frameworks provided and the time they took for migrations and upgrades etc. I cannot wait at all.

First of all, Microsoft Azure is a beast. If you can afford them, they are the best solution providers for ASP.NET based on Windows Server. Did you know, they have trimmed their virtual machine prices by 50%[^]? You can get a virtual machine and publish your project, as it was your own entire server.

Finally, if you cannot afford that. Use the solution that I had to end up with. I used my own laptop as the web server for my applications, and I forwarded the same method to my cousin who has his business set up in Lahore (in Pakistan). For more on this approach, consider reading my article, A simple guide to setting up home server using IIS and ASP.NET[^].

This approach, lets you update your machine, change the frameworks. Fix everything, even if that requires installation of a new software. For minimal projects, this approach is the best, in my own opinion.
