Not really - there are some applications out there which can encrypt the whole DVD, but would I trust them? Probably not...

One simple solution is to write your pictures and video to a password protected ZIP file and write that to the disk - it's pretty simple, flexible, and reasonably secure. Alternatively, buy a small safe and keep them in there...

It makes no practical sense. One who doesn't know the password won't be able to use your disk. But what if this person knows the password and wants to distribute multiple copies of your disk, despite of, say, your EULA rules where you prohibit such distribution? This person will easily pass the password to those people; one of the ways to do so would be just adding a file disclosing a password to your file and burning all together.

First thing I would think of would be: is you content really so valuable that some would want to steal it?

More and more computers you can find in the stores these days simply lack the optical disk slot. Some have external drives for this purpose. So, people can accept CD and DVD only of the copy the content somewhere just once and forget the disks. If you prevent copy, as in commercial DVD video (who needs DVD video these days, anyway?), who would agree using your disks?
