A barcode scanner is simply a "keyboard" from the point of view of your system. The barcode scanner reads the barcode and sends that as text to your application. As long as the focus is in the appropriate field the value is "typed" into that field (in the same way as you would do yourself using the keyboard)

There is no extra software or knowledge needed :)
