I would like to strongly recommend you to invent your own idea. This is pretty easy to do, because right now, great number of unsolved problems just flow in the air, surround you in your every step. You just need to look around to get and idea. First of all, you should listen to your own needs, and needs of your friends.

What utility would you like to have to improve productivity of your work? To extend your entertaining possibilities? To add new ways of learning things or getting some information? Music, video, graphics? Crafts? Communication, literature, semantic search, teaching, learning? Cooking? Planning? Do you have some hobby? Something that some of your friends would like, especially non-programming friends?

I understand that you need a relatively small project. By that reason, too, something for "personal consumption" can fit this scale the best. And, from my own experience, and from judgment of some clever people, best software is the software made for yourself, something which you want to use by yourself.

Now, why I wish you to invent your own idea? From my childhood, I remember a song where a lyrical character of that humorous story was too shy to talk to a girl he likes, so he asked his friend to talk to her. No wonder that finally she preferred his friend to him. The last verse of the lyrics says that love is a "serious busyness" (sic!) which takes bravery and where everyone should solve the problems by himself and never delegate them to anyone.

You have something similar here. If someone gives you the very idea, will you feel that your work is really yours? I don't think so. Many people, maybe you too, would instinctively resist the idea which somebody gave you. Look, your school project gives you the rare opportunity to learn something while having plenty of freedom in your decision. Later on, you might be too busy at work to have time for this. So, this is a rare opportunity; use it well.
