I have installed SQL Server 2016 Express on my machine (64 bit Windows 10) which seems to be installed with no problem, and SQL Server Management Studio which again seems to install successfully, but when I open SSMS I am shown a window saying "The application cannot start".

I have uninstalled and reinstalled SSMS and have the same problem.  I did have an issue previously trying to install the SQL Server 2016 standard edition and went round this by uninstalling and installing the express edition. I have tried management studio with visual studio installed and uninstalled, and have tried SSMS 17.0 and 16.5.3.

How did you run this application? From the menu? You can try to find the related .exe-file and run it directly.
