No book can replace the experience! :-)

I started of with getting trained on the things that I wanted to improve. The first thing that I did was to get membership SSWUG.org and go thru their training videos (this comes with little cost). From there on, it was getting hands dirty into what ever came my way. There were time when no-one reported an issue (especially performance issue), but If my eyes caught something, I tried to see if that can be improved. That's how it helped me learn and grow. Everyone will have their own unique experience to share though. 

Books does help to build up concepts which are very important. I will advise you to pick up books related to SQL Server certification initially, to build concepts and then take a deep dive into details.
