Its a bit unclear if the AZ-400 requires that you have passed AZ-100/101 or AZ-203 first? Or if its just a recommendation.

You can find articles that states its a prerequisite, but there seems to be no such requirements on Microsoft's pages that describes the the AZ-400.

The AZ-400 exam has no required prerequisites, if it had it would be mentioned on the Microsoft exam page.

I believe you might have just read some recommendations, the AZ-400 exam itself is a prerequisite for the Microsoft Certified: Azure DevOps Engineer Expert certification.
