Can I just check that the only way to add a measure description to a calculated member is in the markup of the cube? I cannot see any options for this in Visual Studio on the UI.

Yes, I didn't find the description UI for calculated member(this seems available for measure) in VS 2015, and it also can't recognize description properties in script. So I think you might need to use calculated member's name as your description.

By the way, you also could submit this requirement in feedback.
