CL =休假OO == OffDay

Hi,

I want to design one form where one will define the
leave pattern
like

if some employee takes a leave
in such a pattern

off day Casual leave off day

then i want to consider this Casual leave as off day

Then i will save this pattern as

off day off day off day

So currently i have added 7 drop down
Pattern drop down drop down......

pattern To drop down drop down

i want to make this form user friendly i know designing i want to make this form ver user friendly can some one give me nice ideas
one can add many pattern
eg
Pattern CL OO CL
Pattern To OO OO OO
CL=Casual Leave OO==OffDay

One can add upto 7 leaves (1) CL OO CL LWP
and save it as (2) OO OO OO OO
so who ever takes a Casual leave offday Casual leave Leave without privlige i will consider
the above leave (CL)in (1) as (OO) in (2)

We can't really help you much - one mans user friendly is another mans PITA - a lot of it depends on your users and how they are going to use it, and how often.

So try it on paper (or mock it up and try it on screen).
Try it; use it; abuse it!
What works? What doesn't?

Then try changing things as see is you can find anything that makes life easier, or harder. Try to get into the mindset of the people who will use it, and above all: Do Not Design It To Be Easy To Code!

What's easy for us to implement is generally a damn nuisance for users to use...

You cannot do it alone. You cannot assume what the users want. You have to consult the users who are going to use your form. Is that what they want, is that how do they expect it to work. Like what OriginalGriff has suggested, draft out your ideas/designs on paper, or create some mock-ups on screen, show them to the users, work with them. In other words, only the users can answer your question.

Typically in good software development you know what your users are, this is typically done during the software specification, where you identify the actors or users that will use your system. Unfortunately this is where a lot of things stop, if they get that far.

What you need to do if you don't have a spec is to take a couple minutes and identify the type of people who will use your system. An HR manager for example. Then find one of each type of these people to be your test group. Make an attempt at a screen then give a working example if it to the respective user and ask them to use it and make notes about what they would change.

This is usually a process that goes round and round, and its important to tell the user that you are looking at the use of the system and not the features, otherwise you will get into feature creep and never deliver.

There are some things that make for good interfaces, like easily understanding what you are doing, not presenting too much to the user at one time, white space, proper tab order, etc. I've yet to find a good book on this, most are geared towards web which may help in your case but aren't universal.

Long story short, find somebody who would use it and ask them to play with it.
