For the tabular model to retrieve metadata, there are many TMSchema rowsets available. I tried setting only read (READ_Definition) permissions and its not working. I dont want to give full admin permissions since it will give full control (including changing the definition as well as view data). Is there any way to restrict to just view definition on the tabular model metadata?

Did you  run a DMV query against a schema rowset? As I know, you must have server administrator permissions on the instance to query a DMV. You could refer to Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) for details.
