My document libary requires that  documents be checked out prior to edit.  I manually check a document out then edit the propertities.  I have attached a 2010 workflow which attempts to check the document in on this change.  The issue is that it does not work but just hangs:

Workflow: Check in Item in Current Item with comment : checked in

Can you not verify inside the Workflow that the item has been checked in? You need to check this prior to ending the workflow otherwise it will stay pending for ever.
