I'm completely new here, I want to know if I can use azure CDN and still host my website in my own data center. Not sure if you are expected to be in azure cloud.

If you look at step 4 from this documentation, you will see the different kinds of origins that can be specified. You will want to use "Custom Origin" which is for any other publicly accessible origin web server and can be in Azure or elsewhere.
