I have 1 machine that won't accept the SQL command line utils install.  I was trying to install the 2008r2 command line utils.  It took the client just fine (sqlncli.msi) but the utils install (SqlCmdLnUtils.msi) keeps saying it can't fine the client prerequisite.

So I decided to try the 2012 command line utils instead.  Again it accepted the ODBC 11 (msodbcsql.msi) yet the utils (MsSqlCmdLnUtils.msi) claims it can't fine the ODBC prerequisite.

I've rebooted the machine and that doesn't fix it.  It's up to date Windows 7 64bit.  All installers used are the 64 bit version.

I assume that it's unable to find something in the registry, and if I knew what it wanted I'd go fake it, but I don't know why it's whining.

As a side note, the 2008r2 command line utils installed and work great on a different machine (which just adds to the frustration that it doesn't install on this one).  The other machine is Windows Server 2008 64bit.

I don't see anyone else saying they can't get it installed online.  I see a few that couldn't find SqlCmd.exe because it doesn't automatically jam itself into the PATH, but I don't see anyone where the prerequisite is installed and the installer can't see it.

On a whim I decided to run the msi with logging.

MsSqlCmdLnUtils.msi / qf / log installer.log

MsSqlCmdLnUtils.msi /qf /log installer.log
