Hi all

we are looking at putting in server 2012 to gain advantage of the new hyper-v functions (looks pretty cool!)

My question is, if all my guests are server 2008(R2) and my host(s) are server 2012, do I need to buy 2012 CALS for all of my users? as they will only be connecting to the 2008 guests, none to the 2012 hosts (perhaps a few admins, so some CALS there)  or can I just use my 2008 CAL's has I have been?

I'm not a definative expert on this, but my understanding is that the answer depends on how you are licencing your 2008 Guests. As far as I can see there are two scenarios;

1) You are using the Server 2012 licences to run Windows Guests under the same licence using Server 2012 Datacenter edition with downgrade rights for the Guests. I believe you would gt here is you 'upgraded' your 2008 licences to 2012, or you use SA. Here, you are using Server 2012 licensing and so CALs would have to be 2012 versions (even though you're using downgrade rights fo the Guests).

2) You have a Server 2012 licence as the base OS which was purchased seperately to the Server 2008 Guest licences. You have installed the Guest OSs with their own licence key. In this scenario, I believe you are OK with 2008 CALs since you are only accessing a 2008 server using 2008 licences.

Consider the scenario where you are running base Server 2012 Datacenter edition with 12 Linux Hyper-V VMs. If you needed CALs as per the base OS then this would mean you'd need CALs for all users who were using Linux!!! This is definately not the case.

So, in my opinion you only need Server 2012 CALs if you are running your Guest OSs sing downgrade rights from te base OS licence.
