I am a newbie to virtualization. I want to set up a 64 bit laptop so it can run/mount multiple operating systems/servers. What are the proper steps to achieving a full developer's laptop system (Visual Studio, with full access to most of Microsoft's server systems on the laptop)? What do i do first? I first made a mountable image of the laptop itself, which is Windows 7. But now what? Do i install the full Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V product, or a possible shell version or Desktop Virtualization? Then do I install System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2?, then start installing my server images such as Windows Server, SQL Server, SharePoint Server, SMS, etc.

For setting up a small virtual lab setup in your laptop you can go ahead with installation of WindowsServer2008R2 in your laptop as a base OS, & enable Hyper-V role for virtualization & create set of virtual machines, if you have windows 7 drivers for your laptop you can go ahead & try them with Win2k8R2 as most of them would match in perfectly, i have a simple 64bit laptop acer 4520 its amd x2 processor & also amd-v enabled & im able to install Win2k8R2  use the hyper-v role, but im currently having some issue when i enable hyper-v role, i guess its conflicting with the video driver & some time the system hangs.

Its better to go for a Intel Core i7 Quad core (740qm) Laptop with abt 6gb ram, i guess it would be the best in response & performance wud also be good, as a quadcore & more ram i should be able to get max performance from VM's, well
