We are just moving to Server 2012 R2 from Server 2008 R2. We have an older application that accesses it's files via a mapped drive letter. We have a share on the 2012 R2 server, and the users are logged into that server via RDC. So, while they are accessing the files via a mapped drive, there is no actual network communication involved, and there shouldn't be a possibility of "losing connection". However, it appears that if the application is minimized or left without focus for several minutes, Windows is closing the files that the application has open. When we switch back to the application, it immediately errors out, since it is not designed to handle files that were open being inaccessable. This doesn't happen with the same application, accessing the same data (still located on the Server 2012 R2 box) when running under one of our Server 2008 R2 systems.

While we aren't using a cluster or any kind of external storage, is it possible that one of the timers captioned in the above document is causing Windows 2012 R2 to disconnect or close these files, while the same behavior isn't apparent in 2008 R2? I'm not technical enough to fully understand the descriptions of the timers, but the Idle Connection Timer or Session Expiration Timer sound like they might possibly be involved.
