Hi there,

I am about to rearrange all my stencils and shapes in Microsoft Visio. So far I have a number or stencils (manufacturers) and the containing shapes (devices). So far I had no shape-data attached to the variouos devices. Now I want to have exactely this data for all my shapes. I defined my shape data (model type, rack units, power consumption...) and applied it to my shapes. My problem is, that I always have to do it manually with each shape. I take my old shape, apply the data shape to it and then have to type in my data. Afterwards I drag and drop the shape back to my stencil and it is safed. If I want to change something in the database, I always have to drag and drop it to the working space, take the changes, drag and drop it back to the stencil and save. This is too much work for such an amount of shapes. Can you help me out with an easier way to fix this issue?

Hi,

Creating custom stencil and edit master shapes are general a manual process in Visio.

We can create a new stencil to hold shapes that you use often and want to find quickly. In the custom stencil, we can customize a master shape, including changing the default fill color, adding points, changing the icon displayed in the stencil, selecting a different default font, and even applying all needed default data fields.

After you saved the Master shape and custom stencil, it would be a template to use. You don't need to drag and drop the shape back to stencil to save it again if it is based on one master shape.

In the drawing, you can drag and drop the master shape from your custom stencil to the page, add value to default data field. Do other formatting and save it in the drawing instead of saving back to stencil.
