I noticed that Project Professional seems to be able to edit Project Server plannings throught an oData feed. For now I wouldn't need all the Project Server features but thought it could be interesting to provide my own oData feed from my own custom applications so that if an application I'm writing does expose some planning data I could offer to edit them directly from Project Professional.

Project 2003 had a save to ODBC database option, but that got removed in 2007. I've heard no talk of adding a different db feed. I suspect the recommended solution will always be Project Online.

You can write VBA code to save to SQL Server, I've done that for reporting purposes, but saving all data then reading all data to re-create a project for anything but smaller projects will be slow.
