Well, that's not true - you possibly could. But...it wouldn't work very well at all. Modern network cable has between four and eight wires, arranged in what are called shielded asymmetric twisted pairs - which means that the wires are twisted together in pairs, with the twists carefully arranged so that two pairs are not twisting the same amount at any time. It's all about noise reduction, and at the gigabit speeds these cables work at, trust me, you need all the help you can get! You can even get problems with internal signal reflections if you overtighten cable ties!
You will also find that speaker wire does not fit nicely into RJ45 connectors...

Speaker cable will not cut it, unless you want a connection speed lower than a 56K modem would have given you - go and buy a ready made CAT5E or CAT6 patch lead, and use that instead.

Never tried such a thing, but I can imagine that some trick with a powerline adapter could work. That is, you just use a "normal" cable between the two sites, and on both ends you have those special adapters. But with 300meters/1,000ft distance, I have some doubts.
