It looks like that it is clearly documented that you cannot create a reporting server project using VS 2010 using SQL Server 2008 R2.  If I need to create an RDL using VS 2010 what can I do?  Is it as simple as creating an RDLC file then changing the extension to RDL and deploy to the reporting server or SharePoint?

You can create a report in VS 2010 and upload it to a 2008 or 2008 R2 report server (it does need an RDL extension); however the reports that are created in Visual Studio will not have any DataSources defined in them, you need to use BIDs or ReportBuilder to get this functionality. Visual Studio based reports assume that the developer is going to supply the data for the report. Hope this helps.
