I have windows 10 home since i updated to version 1709 my optical drive can't be found. I tried two system restore options but that just left me with a a start menu that doesn't work and still no optical drvive. Any suggestions?

I'm afraid you are in a wrong place. This is a place for software developers. You issue seems to related with (TechNet) Windows 10 IT Pro.

Putting that aside...
Can you see the problematic optical drive in Device Manager and Disk Management?
How do they look like? Please provide screenshots, if possible.

Device Manger:
  [Windows logo] key + [R] > type "devmgmt.msc" and [Enter]
    

Disk Management:
    [Windows logo] key + [R] > type "diskmgmt.msc" and [Enter]
