I have been using C#, XAML and SQL for past several years to develop desktop applications.

Also, I don't want to pick up books / tutorials - I am hoping to read the code and understand the core logic (I will not be programming in these languages).

General purpose Python is easy to understand (at least better than Perl), but "Big data" related Python and R require you to understand those data analysis concepts in order to understand (and use) them correctly, so it requires way more learning effort than just "learning a new programming language". (I know their basic syntax but never dare to list them in my resume for job application because of this)
