We are planning to start using AppFabric Caching for our application, however its not possible to buy/upgrade necessary servers to be Enterprise versions of Windows to get High Availability (actually, just having replication to 1 additional server would be what we need!). The possibility to have secondary objects (replication) however is very important to us, so a little bit disappointed that there's a limitation with OS version.

Is it possible to turn off a cache host in a way that all new requests are re-routed and existing objects are moved to a different cache host so there's no loss of cache objects? I have found some information about re-routing cache host, but its very hazy.

This would at least allow us to do maintenance/minor updates on servers without disturbing customers. Just taking down a cache host will loose all the objects in a cache and we are using it for session right now. If we could re-route early enough and clean the cache host of objects, then it would be good enough. Nothing to do when the server gets killed.

At this time, there is no way to re-route objects from a cache host that you are shutting down. Shutting down the cache host will remove all of the cached items on that host, and the application will be responsible for repopulating those items when it experiences a cache miss.

However, the ability to more gracefully handle the shutdown process is definitely a great idea. We are always actively seeking customer feedback on how we can continue to improve our products.  The feedback we collect from this forum (as well as other customer research) is being used to help prioritize investments we are making in future releases of AppFabric.  Although this feature is not available now, it is one of the items we are currently evaluating for a future release.
