Can someone explain what the cluster size optimizes if you configure the AppFabric cache with the SQL Server Storage Option?  If using SQL Server it assumes the cluster management rule and does not require lead hosts.  There doesn't seem to be enough documentation on what the cluster size option does for optimization. Is it internal in determining the distribution of the data?  Since this option can't be changed it would be helpful in understanding the role of this setting a little more.

Yes that is correct. Partitions is an AppFabric Cache internal datastructure that serves as a unit of data distribution across cache nodes. The cluster size (small, medium or large) is used in the computation of the number of partitions. Further, the number of partitions has a bearing on other internal data structures that serve up cache client notifications and local cache notification based synchronization.
