In our organiziation we have teams that span many development projects and do support of those teams.

What I need to understand is what is the best way to configure tasks that span a wide amount of time (possibly a year) where resources might put an hour or two towards each day or week.

We would like these tasks to show up in the timesheet area, and be easy for resources to enter time against. I am having trouble configuring this properly. If I set a % or time or effort against the task then PWA fills in the task with time automatically. I create the task with constraint of "start as soon as possible" and have been entering an end date of December 31st. But often not all the tasks show up in the timesheet or the taskview or Project pro will change the end date or start date, etc... I call these kinds of tasks bucket tasks, where there is not a specific amount of effort or a specific effort that can be constrained easily.

I hope i understood what you are trying to achieve so i wont give you the wrong advice.

I don't quite understand if you want the task to end at 31/12 but if you do you can add a "Bucket" task with X work and schedule all relevant resource to something like 10% , 20% so their hours will spread upon the year (but it's not necessary, they will update their hours as needed) but i suggest you do that so the resource won't be assigned to much hours per day.

4. at this point if the resources will add hours in the middle of the year the task's dates will move and i guess this is your problem.  to prevent it update 0.01 hrs (or another small value that have no effect) to the actual work field it will force the task to start at 1/1/12 and because this is a fixed duration task no matter what the resource will update it will remain with the same start and finish dates.
