H.264 requires some serious processor power for live HD streaming. I was wondering if I used a hardware encoder (like Black Magic's H.264 Pro Recorder) that captures in H.264 format, can I then use Expression Encoder to then stream that live, taking the actual video encoding away from the CPU? Obviously Expression would still do some encoding, adding Metadata and things like that but the bulk of the work would be done by external hardware, is this possible?

Currently using a source profile for live isn't supported. This is a proposed feature for our future release. If you would like to vote for it or any other features, please visit here. That being said, it wouldn't totally solve the issue as we do not support H.264 encoding in live other than in IIS, which would require the encoder to generate and encode multiple streams. Another proposed feature is GPU encoding which would take some of the load off and allow for less powerful machines to do this encoding as well.
