I have added a new Custom Work Item Type and it will not appear in the drop down list.

I have tried selecting for it to appear on a specific Backlog/Board but cant see. Took that off and will still not appear anywhere.

Have you added the custom work item type to the category? For example, if you want to add WITs to appear on the backlog page, you need to add them to the Requirement Category:
