The file extension is a sequence of characters at the right hand end of a file name (after the final decimal point) which tells Windows (and some other) systems what kind of file it is, and from that it can work out what kind of application should open it.

File-
A file is a collection of letters, numbers and special characters: it may be a program, a database, a dissertation, a reading list, a simple letter etc.
