I have an issue where some Word file stored in SharePoint 2013 are opened via IE 11. The users are opening the files but not clicking on "Edit Document". When they close the file, it shows that it was edited by that person when they didn't actually edit the files at all. This is only happening with Word files and only in IE 11. Any ideas or suggestions?

Hi,

This has been a known "issue" in SharePoint for years. Having files locked and nobody is actually editing them you need to wait for some times and SharePoint will release back to you.

This is because when a document is opened by a client program, Windows SharePoint Services puts a write lock on the document on the server. The write lock times out after 10 minutes. Users cannot modify the document during the time when the document is locked. To work around this behavior, wait 10 minutes before opening the document again
