I have an Access 2007 frontend database and a backend database (Access 2002) that both run on a network server.  There maybe anywhere from 1 to 5 users in the database.  They have recently moved into a new building and to a new server.  This is when most of the problems became extreme.  Before they where on a server where they practically sat on it.

When they open their database it takes maybe 5 seconds.  They can then go to Open Orders which might take 5 seconds.  These times do not bother me.  They can then open a form that contains four subforms which probably takes about 5 or 6 seconds.  But the real problem occurs when they go to produce the order.  When they click on the button and I run a function that reorders the steps to the instructions (maybe at the most 30 lines) and then the form is opened in print preview.  This part is taking somewhere between 1.5 to 2 minutes.  It takes even longer to print.  Then they have the option to email the report.  Before the email is created it copies the 2 reports as a pdf to a file on the server, creates and then attaches the two files and displays the email.  This part is only taking about 60 to 75 seconds.

We have had various network experts looking to see if this is a network problem (they were having issues with other applications) and they say it is not a network problem.  I am not a network guru by any means but he is telling me that the SMB2 Service shows that the "Read" procedure was only requesting data in very small (4K) chunks instead of 32K or 64K chunks.  His suggestions where to compact frequently (which we are), reindexing (does it reindex during compact?), and increase the minimum I/O request size (how do you do this).

I have tried moving the frontend database to the individual desktops for each user.  I have taken off all timers.  None of my efforts have worked.  The problem is that it works fine when only 1 user is in it.  The print preview and print functions pop up in 2 to 3 seconds.  The moment another user opens the database, the response time drops drastically.

Besides,  the amount of time it takes for a project to print depends on two basic factors: the speed of the printer and the size (and complexity) of your project. Printer speed is not solely a factor of how many pages a printer prints per minute. The number of people using the printer (if it is on a network), the amount of RAM in the printer and your computer, and the network settings for the printer all factor into printer speed.

As far as I am concerned, you could make some adjustment for example limiting the number of the users to increase speed.
