I've entered several contacts and dragged them to  categories that I created.  The contact names do appear in the appropriate category.  However, when I try to send an email the contact list places some of the names in a category other than the one I entered it in.   To reiterate4.  When I look at the contact names by category, they are correct.  However when I actually try to send an email some of the names are in the wrong category.  Help, please.

It might be a sincronization problem, when you drag a contact to a categorie the windows live messenger service update the contact list, or better in contacts (http://contacts.live.com) you can administrate better the categories, and then in tohmal in the To box you type the name of the categorie and hotmail automatically recognized.
