Hi there. we've been searching around for this "problem", asking uncle Google, but didn't really found any solutions (if there is any?). In our company we are using Sharepoint 2016 on-premises and Office 365 ProPlus. If we open a Word document (with Word dektop app) which has Sharepoint fields with external data, we get the well known error "In order to pick external items you must have Microsoft Business Connectivity services client components installed".

 

How to "install" BCS in Office 365? Is there any solution at all?

Based on your description, I could reproduce this issue on my SharePoint 2016 environment with Office 2016.

When I picked an item via clicking "Select External Item(s)", it showed the following message:

To solve this issue, I do that:

1. Go to Control Panel->Programs->Programs and Features, find Office 2016 and right-click it then click "change"->"Add or Remove Features", make sure "Business Connectivity Services client components" is installed as:

2. Go to the link, download and install these prerequisite softwares:

• Microsoft SQL Server Compact 4.0  
• Microsoft .NET Framework 4  
• WCF Data Services 5.0 for OData V3  

3. After the above, open the word file from the SharePoint library, click "Select External Item(s)" of the field, Office will go to:
