Hi, I am unable to search in the "Search this site" , the title shows the error message. I also found out that I do not have the "Find an Item" search bar. Also, I have tried to do a full crawl. But the status stuck on "Starting", there are no progress and i doubt its working. 

May I know if there are other solutions to search for an item apart from doing crawling?

This issue may have many reasons. You can try below solutions for narrowing down your issue:

1. Go to your CA > Manage web applications >Select you web application(usually is SharePoint-80) and click Service Connections in the ribbon to see if the service application service is checked.

2. Open the IIS Manager > Expand Server name > Application Pools to check if the Application Pool for Search is running.

3. Run Get-SPEnterpriseSearchStatus to check the status of search components.

4.Go to Services.msc, restart SharePoint Timer Service. Then check the results.

If above methods do not work, you can check the ULS logs based on correlation ID(usually this ID will display in your error message). It might contains some information related to this error. The default location of the ULS log in SharePoint 2010 is:
