I started Windows Phone Development for a class in the master's program.

I was looking through tutorials on MSDN and other sites(stackoverflow, c#academy, etc.), and found out that the tutorial does NOT work on an empty windows phone template in VS 2013 Express. So I try the exact same code in a empty Windows Phone (Silverlight) template, and it worked.

So my question is what's the main disadvantage of developing on a Windows Phone(Silverlight) template?

Our professor did mentioned there will be limitations but didn't mention exactly how.

If the tutorials only work on the Silverlight, then of course I will stick with the Silverlight template...since I still can not find a source or guide that works on the plain Windows Phone (non-silverlight) templates.

There is no difference. Windows Phone 8 apps are Silverlight apps. Do you mean the difference between Silverlight and Windows Phone Store apps? Windows Phone Store apps use similar code to Windows Store apps and are mostly source compatible, but do not ruin in Windows Phone 8.
