That said, given that you posted in the DirectShow Development forum I suspect you are assuming that "DirectX End user runtime" actually installs DirectShow. It doesn't. In fact, it doesn't really install any of DirectX. The name is left over from back in the day when it did install DirectX, but as of Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2003 SP1, and Windows XP x64 Edition, the one thing you can be sure that DirectX End user runtime does not do is install "DirectX". All it installs is the optional side-by-side stuff that some DirectX applications need (D3DX, XAUDIO2, etc.). See "Not So DirectSetup".
