I have an Outlook addin in VS 2005. I am looping through all the emails in a folder. There are some emails which are archived using "IXOS-ExchangeLink". My code looks like this

Dim subFolder As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.MAPIFolder

Dim item As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.MailItem

....

try

   ..

   item = subFolder.Items(i)

    strCat = item.Categories

catch (ex as exception)

        I dont know how far i can help you, but try type casting the SubFolder.Items(i) to MailItem before you assign, hopw this helps you
