Hi. I have been writing an end-user application in Visual Basic using Visual Studio 2008 and ported the code to Visual Studio 2010 last year.  My development platform is Windows XP on an AMD64 laptop with 2GB RAM and 250GB hard disk.  I don't know whether it is a combination of my code base growing to 50+ modules and 60K lines of code, but for whatever reasons the IDE and hardware platform seem very slow and I decided a hardware upgrade might help.

I upgraded to a AMD Quad Core Phenom II 850 with 8GB RAM, a 64GB Sata2 SSD, and 1TB Sata2 HDD running Windows 7.  In contrast to the 5 minute XP boot time, 3 minute Visual Studio load time, and occansional spontaneous resets I was experiencing with the old hardware, Windows 7 boots in about 15 seconds, and Visual Studio loads in about 5 seconds.  Although I have ported most of my source code over to the new machine, I have not successfully compiled yet because some of the more obscure project references are not loaded on the new machine.

In setting up the new system, the SSD is addressed on Sata0, the CD/DVD as Sata1, and the 1TB HDD as Sata2.  Windows 7 recognized the SSD automatically, and that is where Windows 7 was installed.  As I recall, Windows used approximately 20GB of the 64GB SSD.  After installing Windows, I installed Visual Studio on the SSD as well, with the exception of local documentation which was installed on the HDD.  I installed Avast anitvirus on the HDD and a couple of other little things on the SSD and now have used 35GB of the 64GB SSD.

I bought an SSD about a year and a half ago, the differevt was that my ssd is about 4 times the size of yours.. Personally, I wouldn't consider breaking a product into pieces. I may consider which products I'd put where. Ultimately, it's going to be you who decides and you will have to live with it.  Needless to say I'd put the products I need performace from on the ssd.
