A quick search of FaceBook's site finds the Facebook Chat API docs which show that they use XMPP for chat. Another search suggests that there are both OpenSource and commercial libraries that you may be able to leverage. I cannot make specific suggestions, but somebody else in the community may be able to share their experiences.
