Your question about AP 1 talking directly to AP 2 can be interpreted in two ways. If you want them to ONLY talk to each other and be transparent to the traffic passed between them, that is called Bridge Mode and I believe it is part of the IEEE/ANSI 802 standards. If want to know about a group of APs talking to each other and passing traffic between all of them (again, in a manner transparent to the underlying network) then you would probably want to look up MESH networking.
