My most recent line of analysis and troubleshooting seemed to indicate that the "Server Health.xlsx" workbook might be "corrupted"; when I try to edit it, I get an error: "XML parsing failed at line 1, column 1: Incorrect document syntax.", followed by: "Errors in the OLE DB provider. An error occured while loading the connection dialog box component for prompting".

I found GeminiBI pointing to a sql server instance 'localhost/PowerPivot' and choosing database catalog 'DB'. Neither existed. I updated this to the correct server instance and correct database catalog (which was pretty much the same as the powerpivot instance, I.e. the folder above). I also had to install the sqlncli11.1 which you can get from the sql server 2012 sp3 feature pack download from Microsoft, then edit the GeminiDB connection to use this, as it was using version 10.1 for sql2008r2 but the server being used is sql 2014 sp1.

I can now refresh 'PowerPivot Management Data.xlsx' from Excel 2010 manually. The Server Health.xlsx and Workbook Activity.xlsx files only updated from sharepoint using excel services, and not from Excel 2010 (from which is errors saying 'invalid class string'). However, the 'PowerPivot Management Dashboard Processing Timer Job' still fails on sharepoint 2013 with the following errors in the log file:
