I connected a PC through a 3com hub to monitor ICMP between the PC and the Internet.

I connnected my laptop to the hub, started capture (no filters) and saw broadcast packets on the lan interface but no ICMP.

I then installed wireshark on my laptop and the ICMP packets appeared in the capture

Network Monitor doesn't put the adapter in Promiscuous mode by default.  To enable this go to the Select Networks window, click on the adapter you're working on, and click on the "P-Mode" button on the toolbar.  You'll have to do this each time though as we don't remember the setting between sessions.
