How do I use Search Companion by default in Windows Explorer when I click the Search toolbar button?    I only want to use Windows Search in Outlook or when I open it from the system tray.  The problem is 99% of my documents (not including Outlook) are on network drives which I cannot index, so Windows Search is useless in Explorer.

In Vista and Windows 7, explorer search is actually very useful on network shares.
It works by remoting the query to the machine that hosts the share (assuming it's Vista or later.)
So - as long as those shares are indexed on the computers that host them, when you search those shares from your machine, you'll get results as fast as from a local search. You can also add a number of (server-indexed) network locations to a library in Windows 7 in order to search them simultaneously.

Regarding the Search Companion: in Vista and Windows 7 search falls back automatically onto grep (old-style, linear search) for non-indexed locations.
