I am working on SharePoint 2013 and I have created a folder content type with parent content type the folder for organizing a specific type of subfolder within a Document Library. Lets call this content type Operational "folder", and because we have different operations these subfolders are separated in Operational folder 1, Operational folder 2 and so on.

I followed all the procedure for creating a retention schedule for this content type but it does not applied. The retention schedules seem to be applied only for the content types that have as a parent content type the document one, and not for the content types that have the folder as a parent content type.

The problem is that I need to apply retention schedule only for two content types within my Library, the Operational folder and another one with the document as a parent content type, and I cannot use neither the content type retention policy because the folder content type does not been applied, nor the Library and folder retention policy feature because I cannon then use the document content type retention policy.

Per my test, I cannot reproduce your issue, please browse the steps which I test and check if there is any difference with you:

1. I create a site content type which its parent content type is Folder content type, and add this site content type to the library.

2. Create a simple retention policy through Site settings-> Content Type Policy Templates->Create.

3. Go to library settings->Information Management policy settings->click the custom content type which I created before. Select "Use a site collection policy".

4. Create a top-level folder use default Folder content type and then create a subfolder use the custom content type I created before.
