I read couple posts that suggest to improve TempDB performance by storing TempDB on D drive (SSD) of D series VM.

For better performance of SQL in Azure VM use a minimum of 2 P30 disks (1 for log files and 1 for data files and TempDB. In case you want to change your drive letter you can do it by following the steps given in this link.
